Miramichi Salmon Association (MSA) Brood Stock Collection at Moose River on the Little Southwest Miramichi, Fall 2016. MSA collects these spawners to provide eggs for raising over the winter in the hatchery in South Esk. NBCC Environmental Studies students and volunteers assist in the collection of the adults to be transported to the hatchery. The spawners are kept at the hatchery until they are 'ripe'. Once eggs have been stripped from the females and fertilized with the 'milt' from the males, they are kept in special incubation troughs until the following spring when they hatch. The adults are released immediately into Stewart Brook to return to the ocean.
